The others were asleep.
Rena shook her head as she glanced over at the sofa where Precis had fallen asleep after her welding session that day. She remembered watching her briefly, the sparks flying from the torch as she worked on her latest mechanical project. She had worn a mask, thank goodness - Claude had nearly lost it when her father had offhandedly mentioned that she didn't always wear one - but Rena hadn't needed to see her face to know that she was grinning ear-to-ear. She'd said that working was when she felt the most like herself, so of course she always smiled.
She and Claude were slouched over each other - they might be a bit stiff in the morning if Rena didn't wake them, she thought as she finished writing her own essay. Bowman and his linguist friend had pulled some strings to get both Claude and Rena into the university; Precis still had a year or so before she could join them, and she said she was going to make the most of the time and make as many new inventions as she could. She'd bounced right onto the couch, giving Rena a kiss before joining Claude to see what he was reading, since Rena had been working on her History homework and Precis considered it, in her words, soooo boring! (She was wrong, of course, but Rena hadn't been able to convince her of that yet.)
Apparently Claude's book on biology had been interesting enough for them both to fall asleep reading it. Or boring enough, maybe. Rena had no idea which; she'd have to look at it later, since it was probably a required course anyway. Either way, the book was resting on the floor now as the two slept, Precis's head on Claude's shoulder.
It was cute, really. Maybe she should just let them sleep like that, she thought. They'd just complain if she woke them. Then again, they'd complain if they had stiff necks and sore shoulders the next morning too, she thought, shaking her head in exasperation. She'd just have to think about it a bit more while she finished her assignment.
It was a bit strange, thinking of the whole situation, of having a boyfriend and a girlfriend at the same time and all of them being happy together. She'd always imagined the kinds of stories where the brave hero had to choose between two women who loved him, and how one of them always had to be the strong one who wanted him to be happy even if it was with someone else. Somehow this idea had never even occurred to her, not before meeting them. It was far from the strangest thing that had ever happened to her, though. Her entire life had been strange, so she wasn't surprised that this was too.
She went back to her homework; she had a bit more to do, anyway. She'd let them sleep a little bit longer before they all went back to their rooms.
